Ugh, this makes me just as sick as the Wal-Mart next to the Pyramids of the Sun & The Moon, and the Sphinx staring at a goddamn pizza hut:

McDonalds is opening a ‘cafe’ at the Louvre.

The Louvre has the right to protest against boutiques it considers fail to meet such criteria. However, the museum told the Daily Telegraph it had agreed to a “quality” McCafé and a McDonald’s in place by the end of the year, which it said was “is in line with the museum’s image”.

“The Louvre welcomes the fact that the entirety of visitors and customers, French or foreign, can enjoy such a rich and varied restaurant offer, whether in the museum area or gallery,” the museum said in a statement.

STOP IT. STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT. Our greatest accomplishments, our most beautiful works of art, the pinnacles of our culture, are NOT another opportunity to sell anti-culture homogenized bullshit.

A similar argument and outrage was made when the IM Pei addition was made 20 years ago.

Am I really the only one who thinks this is awful? :*(

Nope, I think it’s really tacky. I was just being sarcastic.

I know if I were back at the Louvre, I’d be looking for a Crocque Monsieur (the famous French ham sandwich–pardon spelling)over a factory-line burger any day.

I’ve seen some arguments that explain why the French have really taken to McDonalds–French food is pricy, and due to lack of regulations, quality can be iffy–so inexpensive and consistent is seen as a pretty viable alternatitve.

But inside the Louvre? Surely that would be one place you ought to be promoting culture?

At the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, I had a beautiful cup of lotus tea in their refreshments area. I would’ve felt ill to see a McDonalds there.

Fear not, for the Louvre is in fact fucking shit and deserves this crap!

Now if it was the National Portrait Gallery, THEN I’d be pissed off.

I would imagine that the Louvre is just the beginning, sir.

All this talk about galleries is making me misty. I miss The Smithsonian and the National Gallery, the Hirshhorn… :sob:

I need to get back to the Portland Art Museum. Didn’t get to see all of it, and even an incomplete viewing convinces me it’s better than SAM.

I am outraged as well. All of this commercialization of humanity’s classic sites is absolutely horrifying. Fuck McD’s and their need to be EVERYWHERE there are people on the planet. McD’s next step: build a restaurant inside the National Archives. That would be like burning the Library of Alexandria all over again. Urgh.
