That coffee table looks so pro.

    1. admin April 7, 2011 at 11:23 pm

      Thank you! 🙂

    Omg

Please tell me that if you go behind that furniture you’ll emerge in Sub-Space. :O

    1. admin April 7, 2011 at 11:23 pm

      I WISH.

  3. lightningflash April 7, 2011 at 11:04 pm

oh fuck me, those are SO COOL. Did you do them freehand? WHY ARE YOU SO AWESOME?!?!

    1. admin April 7, 2011 at 11:24 pm

I spraypainted the blue and light green but the rest was freehand. 🙂

      1. faerieburst April 7, 2011 at 11:41 pm

I had the same question as lightningflash, and daaaaaayum woman! Is there no end to your talents?

Also, you ARE entering into that makeup context that Daemonwolf pointed out on FB, yes? YEEES?

Also, did you watch Faceoff? I was curious what your take on it was.

Also, that coffee table is gorgeous.

I don’t know that I have the skills to compete in that this year, I’m afraid I’d make a fool of myself.

          1. faerieburst April 8, 2011 at 1:39 am

            1. We’ve all seen your work. You have the skills to compete. Do you have the skills to win this year? Maybe not, but that’s not the same has having the skills to compete. Which you do.

            2. You won’t make a fool of yourself. What you WILL do is have the opportunity to make connections in the make-up artist community, pick up up tricks, tips and ideas from other artists, get a chance to get valuable feedback from people in the industry, and practice. Possibly even add something to your portfolio.

            You should absolutely do it.

You make some excellent points, I will give it some more thought. 🙂

          3. kindofstrange April 8, 2011 at 4:36 am

While I totally understand where you’re coming from, I agree with Ms. Faerie. Just go into it, try your best, have fun and meet cool people with the same interest.

I am *terrified* meeting some of the badass jewelers and taking their workshops. I am always certain I’m going to make a fool of myself. And you know what? I never have. What I have done is meet really cool people, make connections and learn a lot of great techniques.

            You can do it!

Also, totally kickass work on the furniture!

          4. admin April 10, 2011 at 10:14 pm

Thanks! 🙂 Those are good points, and I should give some more consideration to competing. In this instance, participating is probably a lot more valuable than winning (which I focus on a bit too hard).

I love the bookshelves! They bring back memories of many hours spent playing Super Mario Bros. 2.

    1. admin April 7, 2011 at 11:26 pm

I got the idea from this. 🙂

  5. frogger414 April 7, 2011 at 11:07 pm

You have serious talent for refinishing furniture!

    1. admin April 8, 2011 at 12:51 am

      Oh, I wouldn’t call it a talent, I just got lucky. 🙂

  8. greyweirdo April 8, 2011 at 12:09 am

That’s some pretty awesome work you did there.

    1. admin April 8, 2011 at 12:51 am

  9. demonlet April 8, 2011 at 1:04 am

Oh holy shit you included my favorite:

    NINJI.

    1. admin April 8, 2011 at 2:54 am

The best part is that he’s hidden in the back so he’s a secret ninji. 🙂

    1. admin April 8, 2011 at 2:54 am

      Thanks darlin!

  10. burtonlabs April 8, 2011 at 1:24 am

Holy Fuck! If I had hundreds of dollars and the need for storage, I’d totally comission the shit out of some Mario shelves!

      Thank you! 🙂

  14. thecostumegal April 8, 2011 at 3:57 am

Wow! That table looks so much better! O.O

    1. admin April 10, 2011 at 10:15 pm

It’s really amazing what a little elbow grease and some stain can do. 🙂

  15. dslartoo April 8, 2011 at 12:37 pm

Like others, I came here to the comments to see if the Mario furniture was done with a stencil or printed paper or something. When I saw you answer “freehand”, I went “OMGWTFOMGWTF”. Like, SAID “OMGWTFOMGWTF”. As somebody else ALSO said, “good lord, is there no end to your talents?”

Beautiful coffee table, but that Mario furniture rules all. 🙂 Excellent work.

    cheers,
    Phil

    1. admin April 10, 2011 at 10:23 pm

Thank you, Phil, that is a very sweet compliment! 🙂

  16. kitlizzy April 8, 2011 at 2:49 pm

      Thanks! 🙂

  18. doctoreon April 8, 2011 at 4:06 pm

That doesn’t even look like the same table. I think you should come to my house.

    1. admin April 10, 2011 at 10:23 pm

It really wasn’t hard to do, just a little time consuming. 🙂

      1. doctoreon April 11, 2011 at 3:11 pm

Oddly, I don’t mind hard, but time-consuming is what gets me every time.

  19. conceptcanibal April 8, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Oh WOW everything turned out SO well! As always, I’m super impressed with your out of the ordinary skills. Also, my coworker Sam says he’d totally pay for that furniture, if you’re ever looking to go into business:)

    1. admin April 10, 2011 at 10:22 pm

It was fun, I would Mario up some furniture for Sam. 🙂

  20. weaselmom April 8, 2011 at 6:16 pm

You know I read ALL THE BLOGS, right, and I am here to tell you that your coffee table turned out fantastic. Maybe a little luck but almost certainly hard work and innate talent as well. Did you use gel stain or brush? I can’t be the only one who would love to hear about all the steps of this work.

Those Mario pieces are worthy of a design*sponge “before and after” feature. Yes they are. Are they our good friends Billy from IKEA?

    1. admin April 10, 2011 at 10:22 pm

I used the minwax stain with a brush–it’s got stain and sealant all in one, and then I put a couple of extra coats of sealant on the top since that part of the table is going to see a lot more action than the rest of it. It didn’t take a lot of steps–I sanded it down with 100 grit sandpaper (220 wasn’t cutting it and I wanted to be done before the year 2012) and then brushed on coat after coat of stain every four hours. Once I reached a color level I was happy with, I let it sit for 24 hours, then brushed on an acrylic sealant. I think I’d prefer a polyurthane finish but I’ve heard it’s super-tricky to work with so I went with the “sealant for dummies” option.

The shelves are various Billys, save for the filing cabinet. 🙂

That is so freakin awesome. And you successfully painted all those squares….

    1. admin April 10, 2011 at 10:16 pm

I had to take a lot of breaks before my mind went loopy from painting squares. 🙂

  24. iamthedarkangel April 10, 2011 at 3:15 pm
