Pronounced Stoo-pid

Helpful sign is helpful. I’d like to see more pronunciations as part of standard signage.

You know that whomever owns this studio put this sign up after being driven nuts listening to people call it pie-lay-tees all day. This is the product of focused irritation.

Back in the days when I worked in a meat shop, I was almost driven to putting up a sign like this as well.

So many people asking for a half-pound of EYE-tal-i-an sausage…

Eye-talian is a valid pronunciation, you are wrong in this case. Some words have more than one valid pronunciations.

m-w.com even has audio files for both.

Is eye-talian a regionalism? the first time I heard it I was passing through rural Idaho, and I thought it was a dumb way to say Italian.

this is true and correct as of the last time i was in the area.

there is a town in illinois (bad enough) called bourbonnais. there is a sign at the city limits that tells newcomers how to pronounce it (the dictionary equivalent of bur-bun-ay, like bourbon, eh?). half the damn city’s residents pronounce it ‘bur-bonn-iss’. fuck. damn.

maybe we should take the endings off, and just make it bourbon, illin.

At b&n I get asked for “pie-lates” all the time. I giggle inside. Oh, and feng shui is mispronounced “fang shwee” all the time as well. Hahaha.

If we just switched to Esperanto, this would not even be necessary.
